"Breakfast for Two" by Emily Higginbotham
Rolling over to the other
side of the bed I
revel in its vacancy.
Pulling the cotton sheets
over my face I’m
content to forget
about things that
happen in the dark.
Stretching my legs,
curling my toes
the sun spills in
through the blinds,
a hazy mess
of morning.
Putting on my robe,
my mind on cold pizza,
hangover perfection--
but there stands you:
scrambling coffee
pouring the eggs,
the table set--
it’s breakfast for two.
Rolling over to the other
side of the bed I
revel in its vacancy.
Pulling the cotton sheets
over my face I’m
content to forget
about things that
happen in the dark.
Stretching my legs,
curling my toes
the sun spills in
through the blinds,
a hazy mess
of morning.
Putting on my robe,
my mind on cold pizza,
hangover perfection--
but there stands you:
scrambling coffee
pouring the eggs,
the table set--
it’s breakfast for two.
