First Date - Alexis Kayser
I am still out of breath from the
stress of I-64 traffic when I
sit across from you at a pasta
restaurant you picked.
You think I am out of breath because
you are just that breathtaking.
You make sure to tell me so.
You make sure to tell me
all the things you hate about women like
How you hate when they order salads.
I order a salad and you say
“I actually love when women
take care of themselves like that.”
My eyes are mascara-plumped
polite, yours are somewhat boring so
I focus on the spot of marinara
sauce right on the bridge of your
nose. I say I write poems and you say
“There’s no money in that.”
I say thank you, Mitchell, I
guess I’ll stop writing poems
now. You tell me I should write one about
you. I will but I don’t think this is what
you had in mind.
I text my best friend
to pick up red wine as you
order another round of
white. My glass is still
untouched. The waiter notices but you
do not. You tell me this has been
a fun time. You tell me we should do it
again. You tell me you love
how real I am.
I tell you I love
your sense of humor.
